Petrovka Street and the Petrovsky Monastery in the late XIX century.
Petrovka street is one of the main and oldest streets in the center of Moscow.
It starts about 1/2 mile from Kremlin and Red Square. It received its name for Petrovsky Monastery founded in the late XIV century. The name Petrovka was used since the beginning of the XVII century and since then has never changed. This is rare for the historic streets of downtown of Moscow.

In the XVIII century the street began to be built up rapidly in the second half of the century there appeared the mansions of the nobility of Moscow. In the XIX century Petrovka has become one of the main shopping streets of Moscow. Despite a series of rearrangements of the XX century, changed the architectural ensemble of the street, on Petrovka preserved a large number of notable historic buildings.The picture of Petrovka in the early XX century is below.
